What Direction Are You Going?

If you don’t know where you’re going all roads will lead you there.

This is a saying I really believe in and I’ve seen it play out time and time again.

A business without a clear direction starts saying yes too many times.

There can be new initiatives, nice shiny new machines or tools, re-organisation for the sake of change – yet these can be smoke screens at times. Everyone’s busy, but is anybody really moving forward?

Clarity of direction isn’t a luxury. It really is the foundation.

When you know where you’re going, decisions get sharper and in turn priorities begin to make real sense.

If a 50-slide strategy deck is needed to explain things then there may be a problem ahead.

Getting to a place of full alignment as a team on where the business is going is what really matters.

It’s the same when it comes to turnaround or transformation scenarios, the first job is to get all of the team on the same page, which can be easier said than done.

If that step is skipped, time will be burned along with money and goodwill, chasing some significant noise along the way.

Agreed direction brings leverage. It helps a business say no with confidence and yes with purpose.

Without it, even experienced teams drift.

So before the next planning session, project kickoff, or leadership offsite, ask the hard question:

Do we actually know where we’re going?

If not, stop. Get clear. Because movement without direction doesn’t get you anywhere worth going.
